Ray Zellmer

Ray Zellmer, 76, of Wiota, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in Wiota.

Raymond Ervin Zellmer was born on October 24, 1942, in Cass County, Iowa, the son of Ervin Edward and Lela Gertrude (Turner) Zellmer. As a child he became a member of 4-H, and from then on it was an important part of his life. Ray graduated from Atlantic High School in 1961, and following graduation he started working for local farmer, Ivan Brix and at the Wiota Car Wash for Don and Lawrence Haven. He later began his 30-year career at Thermo-Gas installing heating and cooling units in addition to spreading fertilizer; before going out on his own for the next 12 years.

On May 20, 1968, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Ann Petersen in Lewis, Iowa. The couple made their home in Wiota. Ray was always on the go whether it be taking care of their rental properties, mowing lawns or removing snow; really anything to just be out and about in his community. He knew everyone in town and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

He was an active member of the Wiota United Methodist Church; involved in little fixes to big projects like the new roof and carpet installation. Ray felt honored to be recognized for his dedication to his community and volunteerism! He was inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1990, the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2005, and 30 years of service at the Cass County Fair. Ray was also a member of the Wiota City Council, Cass County Landfill Board, and Cass County Fair Board; serving over 20 years. He enjoyed being outdoors and took time to deer and coon hunt and fish.

Ray is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary; son, Russell Zellmer of McClelland; granddaughter, Rachael Zellmer; sister, Karen Albertson of Cassville, MO; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry Petersen of Atlantic, Arla Clay of Atlantic, and Laverne “Dutch” Ratashak of Red Oak; uncle, Max Turner of Elk Horn, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Lela Zellmer; sister, Elsie Ratashak; father and mother-in-law, Arnold and Eleanor Petersen; and brother-in-law, Bert Petersen.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 18, 2019, at Roland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Pastor Garry DeGeest of the Wiota United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Wiota Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family for later designation to the Wiota United Methodist Church or the Cass County 4-H Endowment Fund.
