John H. Yokimishyn, 75, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Friday, November 15, 2019, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The son of John Harles, Sr. and Kathleen Schrader Yokimishyn, he was born February 8, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from high school in Boonesboro, MD in 1962. He then went into missionary training in Waukesha, WI, for four years and was ordained as a minister. On June 17, 1967, he was united in marriage to Sharon Arn at the Good News Chapel in Milwaukee, WI. Their union was blessed with three children, Sherry, Steven and David. In 1969, they moved to Senegal, West Africa, where they served as missionaries for four years. They then moved to Atlantic, Iowa where he was employed by the Atlantic Community Schools as a custodian for 29 years, until retiring in 2006.
John enjoyed golfing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His deep passion was baseball and he coached Little League for 6 years. He also loved music! He attended the Atlantic Evangelical Free Church for 31 years. Spending time with his grandchildren was one of his greatest joys!
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Yokimishyn of Atlantic, IA; children, Sherry (Kirk) Marcuson of Kansas City, MO, Steven Yokimishyn of Omaha, NE and David (Nicci) Yokimishyn of Wesley, IA; grandchildren, Derek, Jacob and Jae Marcuson; and Abigail, Alyssa, Carlie and Audrina Yokimishyn; sisters-in-law, Shirley Arn of Denison, IA and Barb (Ken) Sparbel of Davenport, IA; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Lou Hill and brother-in-law, Jerry Arn.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November, 23, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with Pastor Donald McLean of the Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, officiating.
Burial will be in the Southlawn Cemetery in Atlantic at a later date.
