Obituary for William "Bill" J. Worth

William “Bill” J. Worth, 73, of Lewis, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018, at his home and his wife Peggy A. Worth, 76, of Lewis, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

William Worth, the son of Romeo L. and Dora Ella (Sanny) Worth, was born on August 6, 1944, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis. Bill attended school in Lewis until it closed and then attended school in Griswold, graduating with the High School Class of 1962. Following high school, he worked for Delmonte picking beans and as a farm hand for several area farmers before taking up being a truck driver.

Peggy Worth, the daughter of Richard and Dolores (Kohloff) Boyer, was born on July 16, 1941, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in Lewis. Peggy attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. She then was a homemaker raising her family.

On June 12, 1970, the couple were united in marriage in Atlantic, and three children were born to this union. The family made their home in Lewis and Bill continued to drive truck. Most recently Bill was employed by Schildberg Construction and was still working for them at the time of his passing.

Bill and Peggy were members of the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis. He served as the Mayor of Lewis for 12 years and was a boy scout leader. In his younger days he always enjoyed a round of golf. He was an avid collector of antique toy tractors. The Hitchcock House in Lewis was always special to him, and he was the one who initiated its renovation. Peggy enjoyed sewing and quilting and was an avid reader. She loved to color and to watch NASCAR on the television. Time together with family is what they looked forward to most, and they always had a big smile when their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around.

Bill and Peggy will be deeply missed by their children, Sandra (Rocky) Delp of Woodward, Iowa, Robert Worth of Painesville, Ohio, Don Worth (significant other, Dee Killion) of Early, Iowa; grandchildren, Mandy, Kristina, Jessica, Rebecca, Eric, Kourtney, Ryan and Erica; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; Bill’s brothers and sister, Lawrence Worth, Mark (Jo) Worth, and Mary (Chuck) McLaren all of Atlantic, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

They are preceded in death by their grandson, William Worth; their parents; their daughter-in-law, Kelly McGuckin Worth; Bill’s sisters, Opal and Wilma; and Peggy’s brother, Richard.
