Bernard Wood

Bernard Edward Wood, age 81, a longtime Atlantic, Iowa resident died Friday evening, September 21, 2001, near Oakland, Iowa.The son of Gorman and Lena Kurtenbach Wood, Bernard was born February 28, 1920 in Brayton, Iowa. He grew up in the Wiota, Iowa area graduating from the Wiota high School in 1937 and later the Grand Island Business College. Bernard was united in marriage to Adabelle Vernita Simon on November 8, 1941 in Wiota. He entered the U.S. Navy in January of 1942 and received his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Center in Chicago, Illinois. During WWII, he served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Dobbin. Following the war, they came to Atlantic where he was a purchasing agent for the Atlantic Municipal Utilities for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Bernard was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #445.Bernard is survived by his wife Adabelle of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa; three sons, Thomas Wood and wife Cheri of Gilbert, Arizona, Bob Wood and wife Donna of Walnut, Iowa and Mark Wood and wife Andrea of Powell, Ohio; six grandchildren, Michael Wood and wife Deana of Omaha, Nebraska, Tim Wood and wife Johanna of Chandler, Arizona, Aaron Wood of New York City, New York, Sarah Wood of San Francisco, California, Becky Wood of Overland, Park, Kansas and Madelaine Wood of Powell, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Dean and Hunter Wood of Omaha, Nebraska and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather Tom Coughlin.Funeral InformationA funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at 10:00 AM for Bernard at the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic with Msgr Lawrence Beeson officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.
