Vernon Dietrich Wohlenhaus
Vernon Wohlenhaus, a long-time resident of rural Atlantic, IA, passed away Tuesday, January 29 at the age of 92.
Vernon Dietrich Wohlenhaus, the son of William Henry and Anna (Martens) Wohlenhaus, was born July 17, 1920 in a farm house near Cumberland, IA. He attended Custer School and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1937. After two years at Grand Island Business College, he worked in Lincoln, NE and in Baltimore, MD for the Social Security Administration and the USDA. He served with the Timberwolf 104th Army Division in WWII. He would later return to Cass County to farm in 1946. Vernon was joined in marriage with Maxine Elizabeth Retz on June 1, 1948. They worked as farmers and livestock producers for over 60 years.
Vernon was a Past Master of Masonic Cass Lodge #412 in Griswold. He was an active member of the National Timberwolves Association, and was also a member of the Lion’s Club and the Elk’s Club in Atlantic. Vernon was a member of St John’s Church of Christ in Lyman, IA and was the treasurer there when the church was built.
Vernon is survived by two daughters: Janice (Randall) Ratcliff of Ankeny, IA; Elizabeth (Douglas) Wohlenhaus Johanson of Winnebago, MN; four grandchildren: Brian (Amy) Ratcliff of Denver, CO; Benjamin Ratcliff of San Francisco, CA; Jonathan Johanson of Winnebago, MN; and Kirsten Johanson of Winnebago, MN; two great grandchildren: Max and Luke Ratcliff of Denver, CO; and sister, Helen Smith of Atlantic. Vernon is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maxine, two brothers and sisters-in-law: Harold (LaRoyce) and Kermit (Shirley) Wohlenhaus; and brothers-in-law: Neil Smith and Willard (Gladys) Muller.
A public interment and Color Guard service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 9:30am at the Atlantic Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ south of Lyman with Pastor Celeste Waymire, at 10:30am following the interment on Saturday. Open visitation will be available at Roland Funeral Home 8am-5:30pm on Thursday and Friday. There will be a Masonic service at 5:30pm with a visitation following, until 7:30pm on Friday, February 1, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
