Paul Witzman, 70, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Friday, June 4, 2021, at his home.
Paul Clifford Witzman was born on June 24, 1950, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Merritt Harold and Kathryn Fay (Mewhirter) Witzman. Paul was baptized at the Atlantic First United Methodist Church. Growing up he was active in 4-H and Cub Scouts. Paul enjoyed fishing and hunting with his grandfather, Fay Mewhirter along with his brothers and cousins. This started a tradition that continued with his own children and friends. Paul was proud to say he attended Jackson Elementary and graduated from Atlantic High School in the Class of 1968.
On December 27, 1969, a snow-filled and blustery day, he was united in marriage to Madeline Kay Ahnen at the United Methodist Church in Bridgewater. Paul surprised her that day when he rolled up in a red 1966 Ford Galaxy 500 XL. The car was almost a short-lived purchase as the weather conditions had the car sideways on an icy bridge on the way to the wedding. The couple lived in Atlantic and later moved to an acreage south of town. There they lived next door to their dear friends, Bill and Luella Lassen, where Paul and his sons helped on the dairy farm.
Paul began his long career with American Buildings in 1973. After the closing of the Atlantic facility, Paul and Kay chose to relocate to the new facility in South Hill, Virginia. In 1996, they returned to Atlantic where he worked as a welder at Schuler Manufacturing, Sky Jack and Curtis Welding. In retirement, he kept busy mowing for Atlantic Parks and Recreation.
Paul looked forward to chatting with friends, new and old. He was a talented woodworker and welder. He was a true craftsman, able to make anything you asked of him. He spent his free time in his garage workshop, enjoying his wood stove and keeping an eye on the neighborhood.
Paul is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kay Witzman of Atlantic; children, Chris (Steph) Witzman of Atlantic, Corey (Debbie) Witzman of Wentzville, MO, and Sara (Nick) Harris of Atlantic; grandchildren, Monica (Sam) Graving of Grimes, Carter Witzman and Collin and Elliott Harris, all of Atlantic, Ella, Megan and Jenna Witzman all of Wentzville, MO; sisters, Jean (Paul) Witzman-Holmes of Davis, CA and Joyce (Jim) Jordan of Winters, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Letha Ahnen, his brothers, David and Dale and his sister in-law Edna Witzman.
Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 9th at Roland Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10th at the Atlantic Cemetery.
