Obituary for
Sally Ann Williams
Sally Ann Williams, 87, formerly of Atlantic, passed away with family at her side on Monday, May 30th at Bethany Manor in Story City.
Sally was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on September 14, 1928, the daughter of George and Florence (Radcliffe) Hazlehurst. In 1937, the family left the pottery industry in East Liverpool and moved west for a better life in Burbank, California. They started their own pottery business there. She attended Burbank High School. After school, she worked at various jobs and with her parents in the pottery business.
On July 29, 1952, Sally enlisted in the United States Navy as a WAVE. During Corp School at Bainbridge, Maryland, she met her future husband, Jerry Williams. They were united in marriage on May 15, 1953, in Peabody, Massachusetts. Four children were born to this union.
Sally was a devoted Navy wife, coordinating many family moves around southern California. In 1968, the family moved to Jerry’s hometown of Atlantic. She was baptized on April 23, 1972 at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. She was employed at ALCO in Atlantic for 20 years as a housewares manager until she retired in 1996. After retirement, Sally was a loving mother, doting grandmother, and a wonderfully devoted caregiver to Jerry before he passed away on January 5, 2005.
Sally had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed Sunday afternoon drives to see something new. She genuinely loved and gladly welcomed all of the neighborhood kids and her children’s friends. She enjoyed swimming and dancing, and frequently danced a two-step when music was played at both Bickford Cottage in Ames and later at Bethany Manor. She had a servant’s heart and was a willing caregiver to those who she felt needed her extra attention.
Sally is survived by her children: Byron (Starlyn) Williams of Yankton, South Dakota, Rebecca Turner of Omaha, Nebraska, Don (Tammy) Williams of Ames, Iowa, Sharon (Mike Raney) Williams of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren: Brandon (Gina) Turner, Tiffany Turner, Michael Williams, Matthew Williams, Haley Williams, Hillary Sonntag, and Tyler (Amy) Sonntag; her great grandchildren: Evalyn, Noah, Stella, Parker, Payten, and Kendall; and her nieces: Colleen (Mike) Green and Susan Rudin.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, and her sister Betty (Noble) McElmurry.
