Marilyn Whitaker
MARILYN WHITAKER Marilyn Whitaker, 78, long time resident of Atlantic, passed away at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa on Friday, January 9, 2009. Marilyn was born, the daughter of Charles and Clara (Johnson) Mullen Sr., south of Cumberland, Iowa on November 4, 1930. She grew up and was schooled in the Cumberland and Massena area. She graduated with the Massena Class of 1948. She attended college in Creston and taught for 43 years in various country and town schools in the Bridgewater, Massena, Wiota, Griswold, Lewis and Atlantic areas. Marilyn was especially pleased when she got her master"s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She was married to Robert Raasch June 25, 1950. They lived in rural Bridgewater while she taught school in Massena and Wiota. Bob died in 1956. On August 19, 1960, Marilyn and Edward Whitaker were wed in Atlantic. The couple made their home in Atlantic. Her favorite things included spending time with family and friends, golfing and playing cards. She was a member of Does of the Elk"s Club in Atlantic. She is survived by her husband, Ed; her sister Joyce Kinser and sister-in-law Helen Mullen, both of Corning; a brother-in-law George Olson of Atlantic; a special little girl, Lizzy Johnston of Creston; and a number of nieces and nephews. Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Bob Raasch; five brothers, Charles Mullen, Carl Mullen, Eldon Mullen, Darwin Mullen and Gene Mullen; a sister Gladys Olsen; and sisters-in-law Patricia Mullen, Yevonne Mullen, Lois Mullen and Ellie Mullen.Funeral InformationHer funeral will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., January 14 at Roland Funeral Home. Pastor Gary DeGeest, of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. There will be open visitation and the family will meet with friends on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00, also at Rolands. The committal service will be held in the Victoria Township Cemetery south of Massena. Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic is caring for Marilyn"s family and the arrangements. Friends are welcome to leave condolences at the Roland web site www.rolandfuneralservice.com. The family invites friends to join them for a luncheon, following the interment, back at the Roland Funeral Home.
