Obituary for
Ed R Whitaker
Edward R. Whitaker, 85, long time resident of Atlantic and formerly of Massena, passed away at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa on Tuesday, August 6, 2013.
Ed was born, the son of Robert and Effie (Raasch) Whitaker, in Massena, Iowa on May 1, 1928. He grew up and was schooled in the Massena area. He joined the US Army in January of 1951 serving during the Korean War through October, 1952. Following his return he began his career as a carpenter in which he worked for the next 40 years.
He was married to Marilyn Mullen on August 19, 1960 in Atlantic, Iowa, where the couple made their home. He was very talented at his carpentry craft and business. He will be remembered as a very kind and gentle man. His favorite things included playing cards, enjoying golfing and outdoor events. He loved horse rides and attending rodeos. He later enjoyed trips to Walmart and visiting the pond by the cemetery with his special little girl Elizabeth Johnston.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn and three brothers: Vern, Rex and Everett.
He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Hood of Fort Collins, Colorado and Olive Herbert of Waukee, Iowa; nephew Steve Whitaker of Thousand Oaks, California; and Ed's special little girl, Elizabeth Johnston of Creston and sister-in-law, Joyce Kinser of Corning, Iowa and a number of neices and nephews.
