VELMA C. WESTPHALEN Velma Westphalen, 91, lifelong resident of Cass County, passed on at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa on Sunday morning February 3, 2008. Velma Christina Westphalen was born the daughter of Chris and Ida (Thygesen) Esbeck on May 13, 1916 in Elk Horn, Iowa. She grew up in Elk Horn where she graduated from Elk Horn High School. Velma was married to Ralph Westphalen in Maryville, Missouri on November 7, 1937. The couple farmed north of Atlantic where they raised two sons. They loved to dance, fish and travel ~ and took two very special trips to Hawaii. They celebrated 70 years of marriage. She was blessed with a very good sense of humor. One of her quotes that will live on is, "If you are healthy, you are wealthy.&" She kept a daily diary from 1950 to the day that she passed on. Velma enjoyed her family and her friends at Allen House where she lived the past three years. Her survivors include her husband Ralph; two sons, Chuck Westphalen and wife Marcia of Atlantic, Iowa and Ron Westphalen of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandsons, Bryan Westphalen and wife Tammy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Rik Westphalen of Wellman, Iowa; two granddaughters, Kammi Pelant and husband Brian of Appleton, Wisconsin and Brenda Westphalen of Highland, New York; and a great granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Pelant. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Selma Esbeck, Leona Christensen and Beulah Hook; one granddaughter, Shari Westphalen.Funeral InformationVelma"s funeral will be on Wednesday, February 6 at 10:30 A.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Pastor Dennis Meyer and Pastor Sally Meyer of Saint Paul"s Lutheran Church in Atlantic will officiate. The committal service will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic. The family will meet with relatives and friends for a visitation on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Roland Funeral Home.
