Obituary for Marjorie Westphalen

Marjorie Westphalen, 90, passed on at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa, on September 17, 2005.Marjorie was born, April 17, 1915, the daughter of John Garfield and Ruth (Herbert) Stevenson in Shelby County in Iowa. They moved to Pymosa Township in Cass County when she was two years old and was a resident of Cass County the rest of her life. She attended rural school and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1932. She was a member of the Eldeen 4-H Club for eight years, including being Cass County president one year. She taught school six years at Pymosa No. 4.Marjorie was married to Johnnie H. Westphalen May 21, 1939 at her folks" (Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Stevenson) home north of Atlantic. Marjorie and Johnnie were blessed with two sons and farmed north of Atlantic for 40 years. She enjoyed being a farm homemaker and joined the family, choring until they retired in 1977. In 1980 they moved into the Country Green Condos in Atlantic. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic and the ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine Auxiliary (in which she was a past president and 50 year member of the Eastern Star). In recent years, she was a volunteer in the Cass County Hospital Auxiliary.Marjorie will be remembered for her kind and personable ways. Her children appreciate how their mother was always interested in their friends and put forth an effort to become acquainted with them.She is survived by her son, Daryl Westphalen and his wife, Luanne of Des Moines; a grandson, Bret Westphalen and his wife, Christin of Richmond, Virginia; granddaughters, Amy Urbanus and her husband, Jeff of Anchorage, Alaska and Amanda Westphalen of Turlock, California; great granddaughters, Erin and Emma Westphalen of Richmond, Virginia; her sisters, Gretchen Sanny of Atlantic and Ruth Alyce Mayberry and her husband, Irwin of Northridge, California; and her many nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie, in 1999, her son, Don Westphalen, in 1994; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pearl and Vernon Sien, Leo and Ethel Westphalen, Arnold and Erma Westphalen, Ruby and Dean Prall, and Clarence Sanny; and her infant, great granddaughter, Megan Urbanus.A funeral Service is set for 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa. Pastor Terry Schoenfeld, of the Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, will officiate and the committal will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic.
