Ethel Westphalen
Ethel Westphalen, 92, a resident of Allen House in Atlantic, IA passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003, at the Cass County Memorial hospital.Ethel was born the daughter of Mary and Edward Nelson on July 19, 1910 eight miles north of Atlantic. She attended Oakhill Township No. 8, better known as Smokey Hill School. Ethel was also employed for a number of years at Gregersen Drug Store in Atlantic. She was married to Leo Robert Westphalen January 27, 1932 in Omaha, NE. Following marriage, they farmed in the Lewis, Elk Horn, Brayton and Atlantic areas. Ethel lived in the same farm home north of Atlantic for fifty-five years before moving to the Allen House.Ethel is survived by one son, Dallas Westphalen and his wife Janet of Atlantic; two daughters, Lorraine Peterson and her husband Darrell of Elk Horn, Marcine Tietz and her husband Gerry of Lyman; one son-in-law, Wayne Johnson and his wife Georgia of Lyman; twelve grandchildren, Scott Westphalen and his wife Julie of Brayton, Sandy Verwers and her husband Darcy of Newton, Sue Schildberg and her husband Jeff of Casey, Steve Westphalen and his wife Roxanne of Missouri Valley, Sharon Westphalen of Cuba City, Wisconsin, Wade Johnson of Lyman, Clark Johnson and his wife Mary of Lyman, Shelly Andersen and her husband Brian of Elk Horn, Terry Petersen and his wife Leigh Ann of Elk Horn, Denise Pullen and husband Ken of Omaha, Tim Tietz and his wife Connie of Hull, Darin Tietz and his wife Kris of Omaha; twenty great grandchildren, Samantha Westphalen of Iowa City, Tiffany Slayton of Ankeny, Tresa, Christine and Charles Slayton of Casey, Bailey and Carter Schildberg of Casey, Chad and Matt Johnson of Lyman, Paige and Dyland Verwers of Newton, Brandie, Brooke and Breanne Andersen of Elk Horn, Emily Petersen of Elk Horn, Eric, Kaleb, Joshua and Jessica Tietz of Hull, IA, Shelby Tietz of Omaha; three step great grandchildren, Ruth Brooks and her husband Christopher of Missosuri Valley, Larry Mace of Omaha, Richie Marshall of Missouri Valley; two step great great grandchildren, Courtney and Caleb Brooks of Missouri Valley; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Sien of Scottsdale, AZ and Marjorie Westphalen of Atlantic and a number of nieces and nephews.Ethel is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo in 1997; a daughter, Delores (Dee) Johnson in 1989; a sister, Muriel Miller in 1985; a brother, Lester in 1986 and a brother in infancy.Funeral InformationServices for Ethel will be held at the First Baptist Church in Atlantic, Iowa with eh Reverend Chuck Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
