Obituary for Dallas Lee Westphalen

DALLAS LEE WESTPHALEN

Dallas Westphalen, 76, lifetime resident of rural Atlantic, passed away peacefully, following a valiant battle with his health, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.
Dallas Lee Westphalen was born at the Jones Hospital in Atlantic, the son of Ethel (Nelson) and Leo Westphalen on June 9, 1936. Dallas attended rural one room schools and graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1955. He worked for his uncle Arnold Westphalen on the farm at Elk Horn, and then at the Skelly Service Station for Don Hockenberry in Atlantic. In December of 1956 he met Janet Jewett at the Atlantic Playtime Skating Rink. On May 26, 1957 Dallas and Janet were married at the Anita Methodist Church. The couple celebrated 55 years of marriage.
He was a member of the Baptist Church since he was baptized at the age of twelve. He was a lifetime member of American Quarter Horse Association and Rawhide Saddle Club and was a 4H Leader in Atlantic. He worked at the Valley and Odins Resaurants. The couple then went to Gove, Kansas to work on a farm in 1984 and returned to Atlantic where he worked for Henningsen Construction. They raised quarter horses for nearly 30 years. The children got involved, and the whole family had a lot of fun trail riding and showing horses over several years.
Dallas and Janet farmed on several farms, including his folks’ home place, bottom ground at Lorah, north of Anita and East of Anita for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Janet; son Scott Westphalen (Julie) of Brayton, granddaughter Samantha Schwenneker (Brent) and great grandsons Bryce and Nolan Schwenneker; daughter Sandy Verwers (Rick Bice) of Monroe, granddaughter Paige Verwers and grandson Dylan Verwers; daughter Sue Westphalen of Atlantic, granddaughter Tiffany Rush (Aric) and great grandsons, Jonah and Maxwell, granddaughter Tresa Slayton, granddaughter Christine Slayton (Michael Dewall), grandson Charles Slayton, granddaughter Bailey Schildberg, and grandson Carter Schildberg; son Steve Westphalen (Roxanne) of Missouri Valley, granddaughter Ruth Brooks, great granddaughter Courtney Brooks, and great grandson Caleb Brooks, grandson Larry Mace (Kayla), great granddaughters Sophia and Ella Mae Mace, and great grandson Elijah Mace, grandson Richard Marshall; daughter Sharon Gaul (Brian) of Dubuque and granddaughter Eve Gaul; sister Loraine Petersen (Darrell) and sister Marcine Tietz;brother-in-law Wayne Johnson (Georgia); sister-in-law Janey Powell (Roger) and sister-in-law Judy Jewett and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
