Bertha Ethel Waters
Bertha Ethel Waters, 96, of Atlantic, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Heritage House in Atlantic.The daughter of Charley Hutson and Celia Adline (Cox) Houchin, Bertha was born December 2, 1904 in Leroy, Kansas. As a young girl she moved with her family to Fontanelle, where she graduated from high school. Bertha taught school until she married Fredrick Kluever, September 27, 1925; he died in 1929. She was later united in marriage to William Waters in 1935 and he died in 1980. She was a secretary of the Massena School Board and also worked at the post office. Bertha enjoyed quilting and refinishing furniture in her younger years. In her later years, she took up painting and did some traveling. She was a member of the Saints Peter and Paul C.C.W. Quilt Club.Surviving are two sons, Gene C. Kluever and his wife Arlene of Atlantic and John T. Waters and his wife Carole Lee of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Connie Lenius and her husband Jim, Pat Sutters and her husband Emery both of Rienbeck and Becky Kluever of Atlantic, John Waters II and Cindi Waters both of Des Moines; five great-grandchildren, Christy, Lisa and Jamie Shutters and Carrie and Jeff Lenius all of Rienbeck, Iowa; three step-grandchildren; six great step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Frederick Kluever; her second husband, William Waters, three brothers, Claude, Ralph and Bernard Houchin; and two sisters, Ellen Brown and Elsie Holsman.Funeral InformationServices for Bertha were held Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at 10:00AM at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa with Msgr. Lawrence Beeson officiating.Interment was in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
