Judy J. Warwick, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, November 5, 2020, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.
Judith Jean was born on November 19, 1941, in Anita, Iowa, the daughter of Albert Jerry and Eva Alvina (Wahe) Karns. She was a twin to her brother, Jerry; from birth on they shared a special connection. Judy was selected to the All-Conference basketball team her senior year and exceled in her academics. She graduated Salutatorian in the Anita High School Class of 1960. Following graduation, she moved to Des Moines and lived with her sister and future sister-in-law and worked at Bankers Life. This is where she realized her natural ability to navigate the computer; it came so easy to her that at times she was the one they called to diagnose a problem or format new software.
In the early 1960’s she started working at the Anita State Bank and in her 25 years of employment worked her way into the role of Vice-President. On September 8, 1963, she was united in marriage to Charles Van Aernam at the United Methodist Church in Anita. The couple was blessed with three children, Sandy, Tammy and Allen. In 1987, she began serving as the Cass County Deputy Treasurer. Even though she dreamed of being a teacher; her love of computers grew throughout her career; making her the go-to person when problems would arise. Judy was united in marriage to Gary Warwick on her birthday in 2000 at the Methodist Church in Council Bluffs.
Judy found great joy in being able to care for others and gave to others any chance she could. Judy and Gary transported people to appointments in the city, delivered meals on wheels and helped set up life lines. Every year she looked forward to helping fellow classmates with the Alumni Banquet. Judy was blessed with a “green thumb.” She grew a large vegetable garden in her earlier years and her home was always highlighted with all the beautiful flowers; recently receiving an award from the city. Judy also loved cats and butterflies. There was no doubt to anyone that Judy’s family was her #1. Her kids will always be appreciative of their wonderful childhood, all except the matching outfits she made them wear to school, and the never-ending love she gave her grandchildren. Whenever they asked for anything the answer was always, “Yes,” rarely saying No even if their parents thought differently. Go Hawkeyes!!
Judy is survived by her husband, Gary; daughters, Sandy Van Aernam and Tammy (Shane) Reed; son, Allen (Stacy) Van Aernam; grandchildren, Grace Van Aernam, Kelsey Littleton, Jordan Littleton, Camaron Reed, Kayden Reed, Kealin Reed, Hailey Reed, Kendra Reed, Kinsley Reed, Brittaney (Corey) Elliott, Austin (Allyson) Van Aernam, Allen Van Aernam Jr., Curclund Van Aernam, Stellah Van Aernam, Nella Ruth Van Aernam, Ellanor Mable Van Aernam, Boyce Truman Van Aernam; great-grandchildren, Clair, Charlie and Corttaney Elliott, Allis Van Aernam, and three more on the way; sister, Jackie Kilcoin; brother, Jerry (Shirley) Karns; sister-in-law, Sherill Karns; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
