Obituary for
Darrel D Waggoner
Darrel D. Waggoner, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.
Darrel Dee Waggoner was born on January 27, 1926, in Massena Township, Iowa, the son of Paul David and Velma Opal (South) Waggoner. He grew up with his brother, Jack on the farm, feeding livestock, tending the crops and helping their dad with the threshing machine. He told stories of hunting squirrels and skinny dipping -- "with no girls, of course." In 1944, he graduated from Cumberland High School. During WWII, he was unable to enter the military for health reasons, but tenaciously found ways to contribute to the effort, including recycling old metal and later heading for California to work in the aircraft plant. When the war ended, he returned to Atlantic and met his future wife. On January 20, 1951, he married Agnes Irene Christensen in Atlantic. He apprenticed for 9 months to become a barber and owned and operated Hiland Barber Shop in Des Moines and later barbered in Atlantic. They lived in Des Moines, Kimberling City, Missouri, at Table Rock Lake, Brayton and in 1984, made Atlantic home.
Darrel was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. In his spare time, he enjoyed painting, woodcarving and carpentry. Darrel treasured his considerable assortment of classic, model cars that he crafted and painted himself. He flew airplanes and owned two, the last one being a four seated Piper Tripacer Cub. He felt that time on a boat was time well spent and in their retirement, he and Agnes took a cruise to the Bahamas. Another special memory for him was traveling to Las Vegas. He is fondly described by his family as being witty, smart, frugal, daring and creative. His greatest joy was spending time with the love of his life, Agnes.
Darrel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Agnes of Atlantic; and nieces and nephews, Linda Elliott of Omaha, Nebraska, Debra Waggoner of San Jose, California, Charlotte (Randy) Phippen of Exira, Iowa, Craig (Connie) Lykke of Brayton, Iowa, and Carol (Al) Menke of Bettendorf, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Velma Waggoner; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack D. and Norma Waggoner; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bernice and Harold Lykke.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Pastor Nancy Jensen of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic officiating.
