John Mitchell Trewet, 45, longtime lawyer and Atlantic resident, died in an aviation accident near South Bend, Indiana on the evening of Monday, November 13, 2006.Mitch was born on January 20, 1961, in Iowa City, the son of Carrol and Betty Trewet. He grew up in Atlantic, graduating from the Atlantic High School, Class of 1979. He attended Drake University, graduating from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1985, and the College of Law in 1988. He has practiced law in Atlantic since 1990, for the last several years as a partner at Rutherford, Trewet and Knuth. He was married to Tama Petersen in Exira, IA on August 31, 1990. Two children were born to them, Chance Petersen Trewet, December 3, 1992, and Caroline Maltais on July 1, 1995, and they all were the heart of his life. His interest in aviation began early; as a child, he flew with his Dad. While in high school he began working on his own flying credentials, and received his first license shortly thereafter. His love for adventure led him into many areas, including horseback riding, swimming, hunting and fishing trips, sky-diving, motorcycle trips, rock-climbing, but always back to flying. He was a dedicated dad and was never happier than when introducing his children to new places and explorations. He was the kind of friend anyone would like to have. He was the champion of the underdog. He was a collector of almost anything. He was a scamp and a tease, and often his family bore the brunt. According to his resume, he was perhaps the finest water-skier in the free world. His paternal grandparents, Carrol and Ruth Trewet, and maternal grandparents, Jesse and Maxine Chance, all of Sidney, IA have preceded him on his journey. He'll be kept in loving memory by his wife Tami and their children, Chance and Caroline; his parents, Dr. Carrol and Betty Trewet of Atlantic; one sister, Lauri Vance and her husband Rick of Omaha, NE; three brothers, Matt Trewet and his wife Cora Lynn of Ankeny, IA Mike Trewet and his wife Lisa of Mason City, IA, Mark Trewet and his wife Jodi of Granger, IA; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald and Isabelle Petersen of Exira, IA, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Teresa Christensen and her husband Tom of Audubon, IA, Mark Petersen and his wife Amy of Libby, Montana, Patrick Petersen and his wife Mary of Exira, IA, Jennifer Petersen of Omaha, NE an Aunt Nancy Kedzior and her husband Mark of Iowa City, IA; two cousins, many nieces and nephews, and more friends than he knew he had.Visitation will be at the Cass County Community Building in Atlantic Sunday, November 19, 1:00 â 4:30 p.m. Memorial Service to be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Atlantic, IA, Monday, November 20 at 10:30 a.m. Private committal to follow at Grandview Cemetery near Sidney IA.Funeral InformationIN REMEMBRANCEMitch TrewetBorn January 20, 1961Iowa City, IowaENTERED INTO RESTMonday, November 13, 200645 years, 9 months and 23 daysMEMORIAL SERVICE10:30 AM, Monday, November 20, 2006St. Paul Lutheran Church ~ Atlantic, IowaOFFICIATINGPastor Dennis Meyer & Pastor Sally MeyerSt. Paul Lutheran Church ~ Atlantic, Iowa MUSICAL SELECTIONS Wind Beneath My Wings by TamiHONORARY BEARERS Matt Trewet Mike Trewet Mark Trewet Rick Vance David Boyd Bob Saum Terry Rutherford Andy Knuth Chance Trewet Caroline TrewetFLOWER COMMITTEE Larry & Mary Turner Bob & Judy Camblin Gary & Donna Pellett Jim & Nancy Pellett Dick & Doris Cook Sheila Friday Toni Geier Thea Kyhnn Deborah Freeland Trudy Eblen Cyd Lindeman Sara Nelson Leslie Chivers Marci VanGinkle Sherry Davis COMMITTAL SERVICEPrivate interment on Monday afternoon at the Grandview Cemetery near Sidney, IowaLUNCHEONA luncheon will be served at the church following the service.
