Verda Thurman

Verda Elsie Thurman, 86, a lifelong resident of Cass County passed away Thursday, September 6, 2001, at the Griswold Care Center.The daughter of Wilhelm and Mary (Raworth) Guske, Verda was born March 10, 1915 southwest of Atlantic where she grew up and graduatedfrom Atlantic High School. Verda was united in marriage to Leo Hans Thurman March 8, 1936 at the home of her parents southwest of Atlantic. They farmed the family farm with the exception of two years and remained on the same farm for over 50 years. They purchased the family farm in 1950. Verda was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic.Surviving are one son Ronald Fuhrman and his wife Alyce of Ames; one daughter Barbara Newman and her husband Dennis of Lyman; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Thurman of Atlanta, Georgia, Rhoda Gowey and her husband Jerry of Urbandale, Iowa, Brian Thurman of Tempe, Arizona, Christine Thurman of Atlanta, Georgia, Kimberly Whiley and her husband Terry of Griswold, Iowa and David Newman and his wife Gail of Lyman, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Mitchell Whiley, Taylor, Emma and Rachel Gowey, and Shinelle Newman; one sister, Alice Joyce of Lewis, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Niles Fuglsang of Omaha, Nebraska; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother Frank Guske; and one sister Verna Fuglsang.Funeral InformationA memorial service for Verda will be held Monday, September 10, 2001, at 2:00 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic following a family committal service at 1:30 PM at the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa. Pastor Stephen Gronseth of Atlantic will officiate.
