Lois J. Thornton
Lois Thornton, 88, a long time resident of Atlantic and Walcott, IA passed on at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, March 29, 2006.Lois was born on December 30, 1917, the daughter of William H. and Esther (Petit) McIntyre, in their home in Anita, IA. She grew up and attended school in Anita, where her father was a carpenter. She went on to graduate from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Lois was married to James Weston Thornton on March 10, 1943 in Ames in the family home of Dr. and Mrs. Ben King. The couple started married life in Huxley, IA. They enjoyed raising their family of three children in Walcott, IA where, for thirty five years, Lois worked as a secretary, side-by-side with Jim in his Veterinary Practice. She was active in her community and church. Upon moving to Atlantic, she was a committed member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Lois was involved in UMW, PEO, Ladies Golf Association, and Hospital Auxiliary. Lois is survived by her daughter, Kay D. Tweedy and her husband, Ross of Columbia, IL; her two sons, Kent W. Thornton and his wife, Barbara of Little Rock, AR and James D. Thornton and his wife, Nancy of Marion, IA; five grandchildren, James Thornton and his wife, Angela, Jennifer Thornton, Matthew Thornton and his wife, Megan, Emily Pfitzenmaier and Jacob Pfitzenmaier; four great grandchildren, Nicholas Thornton, Devin Thornton, Carson Thornton and Adam Thornton; her brother, Jim McIntyre and her three sisters, Esther Mae Flatt, Dorothy Milligan, Roberta "Bobby" and her husband, "Bud" Smith.
