IRENE THOMAS Irene V. (Moffatt) Thomas, 95, past Avoca, Marne and Elk Horn resident, passed away at Allen House in Atlantic, Iowa on Monday, March 9, 2009. Irene Vera Thomas was born the daughter of Edward and Bertha (Handbury) Moffatt in Neola, Iowa on November 15, 1913. She grew up in the Neola area and graduated from high school there. She took teachers training and taught country school. Irene was married to Clifford William Thomas on June 24, 1937 in Torrington, Wyoming. In the early years of their marriage, Cliff worked for Peter Kiewit Construction and they traveled, living in a trailer, throughout the United States and Canada. In 1945 they started farming near Avoca; in 1959 they moved to a farm north of Marne; then, in 1986 they retired in Elk Horn. The couple was blessed with a son who shared their life on the farm through his growing up years. Irene enjoyed many friendships in Atlantic when, at the age of 90, she moved to Allen House in June of 2004. She was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church and a member of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her son Rex Thomas and his wife Ginger of rural Marne, Iowa; three step grandchildren, Scott Joint and wife Glenda of Red Oak, Jeff Joint and wife Sandy of Fremont, Nebraska, Lisa Petersen and husband Trace of Atlantic, Iowa; six step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas Joint, Abbylin Joint, Lisa Joint, Ashley Joint, Cole Petersen and Taylor Petersen; one brother Jack Moffatt and wife Clementine of Neola, Iowa; one sister-in-law Helen Moffatt of Council Bluffs; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifford; and two brothers, Sam Moffatt and Dick Moffatt.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Roland Funeral Home, throughout the week, and the family will meet with relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday evening, March 12. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:30 A.M. at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa. Pastor Stephen Gronseth of Atlantic will officiate. The committal service will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Cemetery. There will be a luncheon in the fellowship hall of the church following the interment.
