Obituary for Rick Tasto

Rick Tasto, 67, of Atlantic, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, at Cass County Memorial Hospital after a valiant battle with cancer.

Richard Merlin Tasto was born on December 27, 1950, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Merlin Cord and Beverly Jean (Marshall) Tasto. While growing up Rick enjoyed learning the carpentry trade from his dad. In high school Rick excelled in basketball and held a scoring record in the Corner Conference. He graduated from Malvern High School in 1969. Following graduation, he went on to play basketball at Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda. While there he met the love of his life, Nancy Lindeman, and the couple later married on July 10, 1971, in Atlantic. Early in their marriage Rick joined the Air Force Reserves and received training in Wichita Falls, Texas. Once his training was complete the couple returned to Malvern and Rick resumed working alongside his dad in the carpentry business. In 1976, he started working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and remained there until moving to Atlantic in 1983. He then began his 33 year career with Lindeman Tractor, where he was employed first as a parts man and later a sales manager. Rick’s favorite part of the job was the customers. He was a good listener and took time to really get to know them personally.

He was a member of Nishna Hills Golf Course, and in the past had served on their board. Rick was an avid golfer and if the weather was nice what better way to take in a morning walk than 9 holes with friends. It is a sure bet that his golf game in Heaven is one free of his slice. When the grandkids reached the right age he was excited to get a golf club in their hands. Rick was a collector of items of all kinds from toy tractors to guns, and for many years helped organize the Southwest Iowa Farm Toy Show. He continued to restore furniture and toy tractors through the years.

There were many things that he enjoyed through the years but his family and the time they spent together made him complete. Fond memories were made in all sorts of ways from target shooting, family get togethers, and their trips to Omaha to eat Mexican food at Howard’s Charro. No matter what Rick had going on he always made time for those around him; never in a hurry. Whether it was in just listening or helping someone through a rough time, even tucking a little something extra in their wallet, he always did what he could. He had many life-long friends and he cherished their friendship.

Rick’s loving spirit and constant smile will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy; daughter, Jenny (Matt) Williams; sons, Jason Tasto and Jared (Dacee) Tasto; grandchildren, Alex, Maddy, Colten, Savanna, Kaden and Ciara; parents, Merlin and Beverly Tasto; brother, Steve Tasto; father and mother-in-law, Bob and Norma Jean Lindeman; sisters and brother-in-law; Becky Maley and Fred (Cyd) Lindeman; aunt, Marion Saar; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Laura Tasto, Vera Schroeder and Albert Marshall; brother-in-law, Bobby Maley; and nephew, Tom Maley.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, January 12th at Roland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Mike Eels of the Atlantic Gospel Chapel officiating. A private family burial will take place prior to the service in the Atlantic Cemetery.

To honor the memory of Rick, Lindeman Tractor will be closed Saturday, January 13th.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family to be given to the Atlantic Gospel Chapel for later designation to Iowa Bible Camp and the Tom Maley Memorial Fund.

Roland Funeral Service is caring for Rick's family and his arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
