Betty Jean Sunderman (Beckendorf)

Betty Sunderman, 86, of Walnut, Iowa, died Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Allen Place in Atlantic.

Betty Jean was born on July 17, 1934, at home in Hancock, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Irene (Croghan) Beckendorf. She graduated from Lewis High School in 1952.

On August 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Darrell Dean Sunderman at the First United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis. The couple was blessed with two sons, Sam and Steve.

Betty was a natural at caring for others and was always there for her family. Her cooking was exceptional and always brought family together, anything she made was delicious, especially her Thanksgiving meal. She maintained a large vegetable and flower garden; canning countless produce through the years. When looking out the window she loved watching the squirrels and birds at their feeders, with cardinals being her favorite.

Betty enjoyed putting puzzles together. Her works of crocheting, knitting and needle point was shared with others throughout the years. She followed sports and looked forward to attending Walnut High School basketball games and watching the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and NBA basketball.

Betty was a longtime member of the Walnut First Presbyterian Church; serving as church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and active with the United Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.

Betty is survived by her son, Steve (Michelle) Sunderman of Walnut; step-granddaughter, Jenny Bunker of Manning; brother, Bob Beckendorf of Atlantic; and extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Dorothy Beckendorf; husband, Darrell Sunderman; son, Sam Sunderman; brother, Boyd Beckendorf; and sister-in-law, Beverly Beckendorf.

Open visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service on Wednesday at the church starting at 9:30 a.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut. Burial will be in the Layton Township Cemetery.

Memorials may directed to the family for designation at a later date.
