Obituary for Doris Elizabeth Strickland

DORIS ELIZABETH (CLINE) STRICKLAND Doris Elizabeth (Cline) Strickland passed away at her home in Anita, Iowa on Monday morning, June 22, 2009, at the age of 96, after a long illness. She was born in Adair County, Iowa on September 9, 1912, the only child of Wesley and Clara Cline. She attended rural schools in Adair County and High School in Greenfield, Iowa. She was married to Clarence Strickland in Creston, Iowa on April 30, 1930. They farmed in Adair County and later in Cass and Audubon counties. Three children were born to this union, two daughters, Ruth and Jean and one son David. A long time evangelical Christian, Doris was baptized in Lake Anita by an Assembly of God pastor about 30 years ago. After her children were mostly grown, she began working away from home. Doris took summer sessions, studying cooking, at Iowa State University. She was a wonderful cook and used that talent at her jobs in the Anita School lunch programs for 20 years. She was head cook there for several years, until 1974. She was the lead cook at Colonial Manor when it first opened. Doris will be remembered by her family and friends for her specialization in apple pies and cinnamon rolls. Following a farm accident, Doris took loving care of her husband Clarence for forty years. After she retired, she kept busy with her special interests; fishing, gardening and her pets. She loved baby animals and raised many of them. She was a past president of the Anita Garden Club. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Eiben and her husband Ardell of Anita, IA and her son David Strickland and his wife Vinita of Anita, IA; a sister-in-law Ramona Strickland of Collins, IA; her brother-in-law Howard Strickland of Rockwell, NC; 19 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren and 59 great great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
