Obituary for Richard James Stevens

RICHARD "DICK" J. STEVENS Dick Stevens, 76, passed away unexpectedly at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Richard James Stevens was born the son of Hiram H. and Mary (Green) Stevens June 7, 1933 in Kasson, Minnesota. He grew up attending school in Kasson and entered the Army Signal Corp following high school graduation with the Kasson Class of 1951. He had the adventure of helping with the laying of the first communication lines in Alaska. Dick was married to Delores Evelyn Paulson on November 20, 1954 in Mantorville, MN. The couple was blessed with three daughters and a son and he became superintendent of municipal utilities in Luverne, Minnesota. In 1970, they moved to Atlantic where he became general manager of Atlantic Municipal Utilities for thirty years before retiring in 2000. He joined AMU August, 1970, and since then has held numerous positions in local, state and national organizations, mainly dealing directly in electrical and water related fields. He was a member of the American Water Works Association and became a life member in 1996. During his tenure with the association, he served on various committees. From 1975 -1976, he was president of the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities and became a life member. Dick will be remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor and that when anyone had a need, he was there for them 24 hours, around the clock. He was multi-talented, a good worker and especially enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Dick is survived by his wife Delores; daughters, Lynnette Mary Johnson of Springfield, MO, Michelle Marie Atwood and husband Edward of Murphysboro, IL and Jacalyn Marie Stevens of Columbus, Ohio; son Jeffery James Stevens of Atlantic, IA, 11 grandchildren, Scott Martens, Jennifer Marksmiller, Bryan Martens, Cynthia Clere, Alisha Johnson, Sharon Bynum, Josiah Hair, Matthew Hair, Jacob Stevens, Sean Stevens and Rebecca Stevens; 14 great grandchildren; and one sister Martha Maser of Hinckley, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Phillip and Paul.Funeral Information There will be a Scripture Prayer Service at 5:30 and family will meet with friends until 7:30 P.M. on Sunday, June 28 at Roland Funeral Home. Father Dan Seipker will officiate. Dick's funeral will take place at 10:30 A.M. on June 29 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa. There will be a military cemetery service in the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery following the funeral mass. Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic is caring for Dick's family and the arrangements.
