Obituary for Ruth Ellowene Steffens (Snyder)

Ruth Ellowene Steffens, 86, of Atlantic, IA, passed away Thursday, May 30th, at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center in Atlantic.

Ruth was born in Diamond, Missouri on February 15, 1927, a daughter of the late Lena (Jackson) and Jack Snyder. As a child she attended school in Wiota, IA and has lived in the Wiota and Atlantic area most of her life.

On December 29, 1943, she married John G. Steffens in Troy, Kansas and the couple was blessed with four children.

Ruth worked as a CA for Dr. Jim Humphry's Chiropractic Office for 8 years but spent most of her days cooking at Vans Chat & Chew in Atlantic, IA. Even though she worked at a restaurant for 30 years, she never hesitated when it came time to fix a great meal for family and friends. She loved to travel and enjoyed playing cards, however, her happiest moments where the ones spent with family.

Ruth is survived by one daughter: Joyce Anderson, of Omaha, NE;
three sons: Gary (Judy) Steffens of Wiota, IA, Bruce (Luanne) Steffens of Griswold, IA and Jimmie (Brenda) Steffens of Mallard, IA; 10 grand children: Kari (Mitch Krueger), Denise (Tim Walter), Travis Steffens, Angie (Justin Eblen), Michelle (Mike Pelzer), Samara Steffens, Francine Steffens, John Steffens, Billie Jo Steffens and Jimmie Steffens, Jr; 14 great grandchildren: Nathan, Rebecca and Chris Krueger, Adam, Sage and Seth Walter, Jordyn Steffens, Ty and Austin Eblen, Marty and Mikala Pelzer, Chance Steffens, Micah and Bronson Steffens; one brother: Jimmie (Amy) Snyder of Council Bluffs, IA.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents: Jack and Lena Snyder; husband: John Steffens; sister: Evelyn Hooker; brother-in-law: Harvey Hooker; brother: Carroll Snyder; neice: Linda Pierce; and four nephews: Harvey Lee Hooker, Dawn Hooker, David Hooker, and Lynn Snyder.

Services for Ruth will be held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA on Saturday June 1, at 2:30 PM with Pastor Ted Weishaupt officiating. A committal service will follow at the First Lutheran Cemetery south of Wiota. A visitation with family and friends will be at the Roland Funeral Home Friday May 31st from 5-7pm.
