Obituary for
J. Irene Steffens (Campbell)
Irene Steffens, 95, of Atlantic, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015, at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.
Juanita Irene Campbell was born on October 10, 1919, on a farm near Girard, Kansas, the daughter of Samuel Alexander and Ruth Lila (Dick) Campbell. She graduated from Girard High School in 1938, and in 1940 from Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe, Missouri. She worked in the Sears home office, and then as a secretary at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.
On February 2, 1946, she married Walter Steffens in Kansas City, Kansas. The couple made Wiota home, until moving to Atlantic in 1963. She was active in the family egg laying operation for many years.
Irene enjoyed sewing and baking. If you visited her, you were sure to enjoy delicious cookies, bars and pies. Her family will remember her large garden and her love of flowers. Even though it was a lot of work she was delighted in spending countless hours canning. Family and friends reaped the benefits of this, as she was always happy to share. She was a member of neighborhood clubs and Zion Lutheran Church. After retirement, Irene and Walter traveled most of the United States. She always treasured visits with family and friends from southeast Kansas.
Irene is survived by her three sons, Roger Steffens of Atlantic, Iowa, Dale Steffens and his wife, Carol of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and Keith Steffens and his wife, Cindy of Marne, Iowa; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Tonya Steffens of Shawnee, Kansas, Amy Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa, and her children, Morgan, Brady and Ayden, Scott Steffens and his wife, Susana of Lisbon, Portugal, and their children, Sophia and Henry, Jeremy Steffens and his wife, Kara of Flower Mound, Texas, and their children, Kyla and Katelyn, Jamie Hunter and her husband, Scott of Okoboji, Iowa, and Kyle Steffens of Atlantic, Iowa; sister, Dorothy Clutter of Girard, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Ruth Campbell; husband, Walter in 1999; son, Ronald in infancy in 1946; and her brothers, Floyd and Leonard Campbell.
Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with Pastor Ken Davidson officiating. Immediately following the service, lunch will be served in the fellowship hall. Burial at the First Lutheran Cemetery, south of Wiota, will be held after the luncheon.
The family requests memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Atlantic.
