Irene Starrett
E. "Irene" Starrett, daughter of Bertel and Marie Rasmussen Jensen, was born February 12, 1916 at her parents’ home in Audubon, Iowa and passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013 at The Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 96.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Danish Lutheran Church in Audubon, IA. She attended Audubon Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1934. She attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska for two years and later transferred to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa where she would earn her bachelors degree. Following her graduation, Irene served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant. Returning from service, she was readmitted to Iowa State where she acquired her Masters degree.
Irene would meet her Husband, Dr. William Starrett in Ames where she typed his doctoral thesis. William spent his entire life as a marine biologist researching the Illinois river. He and Irene would share many of their years together in Havana, Illinois and become members of First United Methodist Church.
Known as intelligent and caring, she enjoyed gardening, playing card games and bird watching with William. Her love for oil painting produced many works of art which adorned her home.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Dr. William C. Starrett; her parents, Bertel and Marie Katrine Jensen; her siblings, Astrid Thomas, Henrietta Kauffman, Axel Jensen, Harold Jensen, Dagmar Petersen, Emmert Jensen, Dorothy Groteluschen, Donald Jensen, and Alice Christiansen.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
