Lawrence "Larry" Sothman

Lawrence "Larry" Irvin Sothman, 92, a lifelong resident of Cass County, passed away Friday evening, May 23, 2014, at the Griswold Care Center.

The son of Hans Detlef and Hilda Dorothy (Meyer) Sothman, he was born June 20, 1921, northeast of Lyman, Iowa. He graduated from the Atlantic High School. Larry was united in marriage to Doris LaVonne Peterson, November 27, 1949, at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Atlantic. Larry farmed his entire life with both his parents and later his father-in-law, thoroughly enjoying the rigors of a farmer and family man. He preferred a simple life and had a sensitive heart; loving his fellow man—even if he didn't know them. Larry was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic.

Larry is survived by his wife, Doris of Lewis; two sons, Vaughn Sothman of Colby, Kansas and Val (Barbara) Sothman of Lewis, IA; three granddaughters, Erin (Justin) Hurst of Des Moines, IA and their sons, William & Chance, Vanessa "Liz" (Ara) Bartemes of Tacoma, WA, and Emilie Sophia Sothman of Omaha, NE; one brother, Robert (Mary Ann) Sothman of Ava, MO; sisters-in-law, Janice Peterson of Atlantic, IA and Jean Sothman of Creston, IA; brother-in-law, W.R. Woodward of Atlantic, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Russell and Clair; two sisters, Laverne Woodward and Rosemary Mallette; his father-in- law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Emilie Peterson; brother-in-law, Daryll Peterson; a niece, Tamara Jo Hetrick; and a nephew-in-law, Doug Younger.

A Celebration of Life will be held, Wednesday, May 28, 2:30 p.m., at the United Church of Christ with Reverend Sharon Guffey-Lewis, officiating.

A private burial will take place at the Atlantic Cemetery, prior to the services.

No visitation is scheduled.

Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date.
