Obituary for
Doris L. Sothman
Doris L. Sothman, 87, of Washington Township, Cass County, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 22, 2017, at her home.
Doris LaVonne Peterson was born on October 24, 1930, in Cass County, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence August and Emilie Anna Gretchen (Brehmer) Peterson. She graduated from Atlantic High School. On November 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Lawrence “Larry” Irvin Sothman at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Atlantic.
Doris and Larry were blessed with 64 years of marriage before his passing in 2014. In everything they did, they made a great team, from encouraging each other to understanding each other’s strengths. Doris tended to be strong willed and firm with her voice and Larry a bit more laid back, sensitive and quiet. While Larry handled things at the farm, Doris raised the boys and did the housework. She had an extremely hard work ethic; never complaining of the work she had done or that needed to be done. Always taking great pride in her home, she was sure to have things just right; no shoes allowed, nothing out of place and not a speck of dust to be seen. In all her hard work her family was her greatest joy. Doris didn’t just voice how much she loved and cared; she showed them with numerous hugs and other acts of love. She was a devoted wife and mother; always there and putting others needs in front of her own. Val and Vaughn feel they couldn’t have been taken care of any better, and will cherish all of the wonderful memories in the years to come.
Doris is survived by her sons, Vaughn (Cindy) Sothman of Colby, Kansas and Val Sothman of Lewis, Iowa; three grandchildren, Erin (Justin) Hurst of West Des Moines, Iowa, Vanessa “Liz” (Ara) Bartemes of Weilerbach, Germany and Emilie Sothman of Omaha, Nebraska; and two great-grandchildren, William and Chance Hurst.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Sothman and brother, Daryll Peterson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, with Reverend Nancy Jensen officiating.
A private burial will take place prior to the service in the Atlantic Cemetery.
No visitation with the family is scheduled.
Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to the Open Door Mission in Omaha
