Clair F. Sothman
Clair Franklin Sothman, 72, of Creston and formerly of the Lyman and Massena areas, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002, At the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.The son of Hans Detlief and Hilda Dorothy (Meyer) Sothman, Clair was born September 23, 1929 northeast of Lyman where he farmed with his dad and brothers. He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Jean Louella Roberts on August 19, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Cumberland. Following marriage they farmed west of Grant then they purchased a farm south of Massena and raised cattle for 40 years on their family farm. Clair was the first to bring the Tarentaise breed to Iowa. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creston.Surviving are his wife Jean Sothman of Creston; two sons, Daniel Hans Sothman and wife Marlene Diane of San Angelo, Texas and Kevin Clair Sothman and wife Kathy of Griswold, Iowa; three daughters, Deborah Jean Brass and husband Jim of Cedar Falls,Iowa, Barbara Elaine Kompik and husband Dale of Hart, Michigan, and Carol Denise Sothman of Corning, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, Matthew and Justin Sothman, Leta and Jessie Brass, Tasha, Natalie and Dale Kompik II, Jason McManis and Clayton Pattavina, Sarah, Levi, Brian, Vanessa, Stacia and Kaitlin Sothman; two brothers, Lawrence (Larry) Sothman and wife Doris of Lewis, and Robert Sothman and wife Mary Ann of Ava, Missouri; three brothers in law, Reginald (Bud) Woodward of Lewis, Gene Mallett of Atlantic, and Warren Roberts and wife Allene of Phoenix, Arizona; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Russell Sothman; two sisters, LaVerne Woodward and Rosemary Mallett; and Robert Johnson, who made his home with the Sothman family.Funeral InformationRuneral services for Clair will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa at 2:00 PM with Pastor Robert Sauser of the First Baptist Church in Creston officiating assisted by C. G. Lindeman, Jr. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
