Obituary for Verdella L. Smith

VERDELLA SMITH

Verdella L. Smith, the daughter of Einer and Bothilda (Sorensen) Elkjer, was born in Hampton, Nebraska on October 1, 1923, and died at Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa on February 28, 2014, at the age of 90.
Verdella was baptized on November 11, 1923, and confirmed on June 19, 1938, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Kronborg, Nebraska. She attended rural school and graduated from Hampton High School in Hampton, Nebraska. She worked as a travel agent for Travel and Transport in Omaha, Nebraska for many years.
On September 23, 1958, she was united in marriage to Dean Smith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kronborg, Nebraska. They made their home in Atlantic, Iowa where Verdella was a bookkeeper for Hanke Jewelry and helped her husband with his accounting business. She also served as secretary for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Verdella was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She loved traveling with family and friends, playing bridge, volunteering, and was very proud of her Danish heritage. In fact, her grandfather was a guard for the King of Denmark before he came to America. Verdella was also well known for her zebra collection.
Those left to cherish her memory are one sister-in-law, Beverly Nelson of Atlantic; seven nieces and nephews, Jan (Ann) Joseph, Jerl (Debbie) Joseph, Tony (Judy) Christensen, Dennis Christensen, Marsha Warner, Becky (Evan) Case, Lynn (Julie) Nelson: a cousin, Herman Larsen; and several great nieces and nephews.
Verdella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Evelyn Joseph and brother-in-law, R. C. Joseph: one sister-in-law, Doris Christensen; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Christensen and Leland Nelson.
Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 4 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Pastor Grant Van Lishout will officiate. There will be open visitation at Roland Funeral Home from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Monday, March 3. The family will meet with friends at a luncheon following the service.
