VELMA ETTA SMITH
Velma Etta Smith, 101, long time Lewis resident passed away August 31st at Heritage House in Atlantic. She was born January 16, 1912 in Dayton, Cass County, Missouri to John Charles and Vesta Blanche Lotspeich Woodring. She was baptized along with her grandfather in the Baptist Church at the age of six.
Velma moved with her family to Oakland, Iowa area in August of 1923 and then to the Lewis area in 1924. She attended country schools in Missouri and Iowa and attended Lewis High School through 10th grade—having to leave school to help her family when her mother become ill.
In January, 1936 she married Frank C. Smith at the parsonage of the Congregational church in Lewis. They began farming northwest of Lewis and then moved to their own farm southeast of Lewis in 1950. Frank passed away in 1954 and Velma continued living on the farm, raising hogs, stock cows and chickens. She baked and decorated wedding cakes and did house cleaning in Atlantic. When Roy and Lorane took over the farm, she continued to help there. Her favorite chore was helping with the grade A dairy. She was a charter member of the Sew and So neighborhood club. She also belonged to the Laff-a-Bit neighborhood club and supported the UCM Church.
She is survived by her sons, Larry (LaVerne) Smith of Granby, CT and Roy (Lorane) Smith of Lewis—also, grandchildren, Diane Smith-Hill (Wayne) of Durham NC, Byron Smith and Karen Smith of West Des Moines, and Paul Smith of Granby, CT. She was blessed with one great granddaughter, Isobel Hill of Durham, NC. Also surviving Velma is her sister, Betty Turman of Fort Collins, CO and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and sister-in-law, Lyle and Ruby Woodring and sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and Kenneth Butler.
