Obituary for Louise A Smith

Louise A. Smith, 66, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at her home.

Louise Ann Schwartz was born on February 11, 1948, in Primghar, Iowa, the daughter of Briggs Eugene and Frances Marion (Bjork) Schwartz. She attended elementary school in Archer and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1966. Following high school she studied interior design at Morningside College and Iowa State University.

She and Wayne were members of 4-H when they were younger and started dating while at Iowa State University. On May 2, 1969, she married Wayne Philip Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they spent time traveling in their motor home and taking in many shows while visiting Branson.

Louise was a 4-H Leader for many years and continued volunteering even after her children were grown. She took pride in her garden and flowers.

Louise's family was everything to her. The grandchildren will always remember a trip to the Wisconsin Dells, where they stayed in the "Big House." She and Wayne attended countless sporting events and dance recitals through the years. Christmas was a very special time of year, and preparation began months in advance. The baking of Christmas cookies, sometimes in the 1000's, was a tradition she passed on from her family. The cookies could be eaten during the holiday season, but the Santa ones had to be saved for Christmas Eve.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Wayne; daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Metheny and Amy (Jason) Berg of Griswold, Iowa; son, Nathan (Lisa) Smith of Granger, Iowa; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joshua and Aaron Metheny, Bethany, Brandon, and Brooke Berg, and Lilly, Samantha and Mackenzie Smith; brothers, Stan (Jane) Schwartz of Primghar, Iowa, and Todd (Teresa) Schwartz of Titonka, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joyce Ann (Jim) Waskow, Charles (Fay) Smith, Louise (Carl) Nutzman, Janice (Myron) Person, Larry (Connie) Smith, Kenneth (Lori) Smith, Ronald Smith, Marlene (Bill) Vyoral, Delores (Jim) Simmelink and Mark (Vivian) Smith; and many other family and friends.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents, Briggs and Frances Schwartz.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, with Lynn Stamp officiating.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 19, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date.

Roland Funeral Service is caring for Louise's family and her arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
