DEAN ROBERT SMITH

Dean Robert Smith, age 87, a long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday morning, November 10, 2011, at the Cass County Hospice Center in Atlantic.
Dean was born to Chris H. Smith and Christena (Andersen) Smith on October 7, 1924 west of Brayton, Iowa. He attended school in the area, graduating from Exira High School. Dean continued his education at the University of Iowa where he received a degree in accounting. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where he served for four years. Dean then returned to Atlantic where he started his own accounting business. On September 23, 1958, he was united in marriage to Verdella Elkjer in Kronborg, Nebraska. Dean loved golfing and playing pitch at the Country Club. He also enjoyed playing pinochle with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Verdella of Atlantic; two sisters, Doris Christensen of Minneapolis, MN and Beverly Nelson of Atlantic; seven nieces and nephews, Tony Christensen, Dennis Christensen, Marsha Warner, Becky Case, Lynn Nelson, Jerl Joseph and Jan Joseph; and a number of cousins.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Robert Christensen and Leland Nelson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn Joseph and R. C. Joseph.
