Obituary for
Bruce W. Smith
Bruce W. Smith, 73, of Lewis, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bruce Wayne Smith was born on April 5, 1941, the son of Delford Oscar and Agatha Margaret (Johnson) Smith in Lewis, Iowa, on the kitchen table. He attended school in Lewis and later enrolled at Nuts, Fenders and Bolts, an auto body school, in Missouri.
On January 1, 1970, he met Edna Gross on her dad's front porch. They later married at the Lewis United Congregational Church on December 3, 1971. They were the first couple married in the church after it was built.
Bruce was a stranger to no one, and could make friends any place he went. He loved to play pranks and tell jokes, and is probably still telling them now. Bruce was a family man and enjoyed time with them whether it was just hanging out or grabbing a bite to eat. For many years they would gather every Sunday after church at his mom's house to play cards and have lunch. After she passed away the tradition was carried on a few Saturday's a month at his daughter Lisa's house. The children will always remember the special things he did with each of them which included, visiting June at Burger King or drinking coffee in the evening with Dottie on her front porch swing. His passion for cars continued after auto body school, whether it was just tinkering, watching the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction or attending car shows.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 42 years, Edna of Lewis, IA; previous wife, Mary Angel Smith of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Dottie Ann Smith (Tabatha Woodrome) of Lewis, IA, Sherry Smith (Mike Darby) of Mt. Vernon, MO, Lisa (Bill) Hill of Council Bluffs, IA, and June Smith (Jake Blaine) of Massena, IA; grandchildren, Steven Wayne (Kristen) Smith of Virginia, Theresa Miller of Lewis, IA, David Neeley of Mt. Vernon, MO, Bruce Wayne Smith (Jessica Brotherton) of Atlantic, IA, Sara Marie White of Parkville, MO, Ashley Lynn Hill and Blake Ryan Hill, both of Council Bluffs, and Dylan Blaine of Massena, IA; great-grandchildren, Damon Smith, Gavin Miller, Shyanne Smith, Abigale Smith, Lakoda Dawn King White, and Sebastian Xavier Smith; brother and sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dale Allen Smith; brothers, Billy and Stanley Smith; and brother-in-law, Lynn Gross.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 29, 2014, at the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis, with Pastor Nadine Aydt, officiating.
