Howard Eugene Smit
Howard Eugene Smit, 68, of Atlantic, passed away Friday, January 4, 2002, at his home.The son of Alvin J. and Wilma B. (Stientjes) Smit, Howard was born October 11, 1933 in Vermillion, South Dakota. He grew up in Alta, Iowa and graduated from Alta High School in 1951. He graduated from Buena Vista college in Storm Lake, Iowa with a Bachelor Degree in Math and History in 1955. He started in the newspaper business with his dad in Alta as a young boy and through college. He later worked with newspapers in Milford and Spencer. He worked for the Vernon Company in Newton from 1967 until 1974 before coming to Atlantic in 1975. Howard was united in marriage to Marilyn Putbrese, October of 1955, in Auburn, Iowa and was married to Karla Christiansen Reynolds in April 1979 in Atlantic, Iowa. He was owner and operator of Crabtree Printing in Atlantic, Iowa. Howard was a member of the United Church of Christ, Atlantic Elks Lodge number 445 of Atlantic and the Kiwanis Club. He served in the US Army.Surviving are his wife, Karla; a son, Steve Smit and his wife, Kathy, of Billings, Montana; three daughters, Laurie DuVall of Omaha, Nebraska, Brenda Trewet of Ankeny, Iowa, and Laurie Reynolds of Burlington, Iowa; grandchildren, Jeremy and Shelby DuVall, Cora Smit, Chelsey Peebles and Carter Trewet; a great-granddaughter, Sierra English; his mother, Wilma Smit of Denver, Colorado; brothers, Duane Smit and his wife Marietta, of Golden, Colorado and Keith Smit and his wife Ruth of Sturgis, South Dakota.He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Smit; his maternal and paternal grandparents.Funeral InformationFuneral services for Howard will be held at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, Iowa on January 8 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Sue Hyndman officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
