SOPHIA SHERWIN

Sophia Marie (Ortgies) Sherwin, age102, passed away Friday, November 11, 2012. A lifetime resident of Cass County, Sophie will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She possessed a century of love and wisdom that she shared with her family and friends. Of all the inventions she witnessed in her lifetime she said the tractor, the refrigerator and most recently the cell phone are the most amazing of all.
The daughter of John & Clara (Brauer) Ortgies, Sophie was born October 11, 1910. She grew up on a family farm in Massena and attended school through the 8th grade in a one room school house. After graduating the 8th grade she helped on the farm milking cows, cooking and attending to the family garden. It was this foundation that established her life long motto, and secret to her long life—work hard, eat good food, and have a strong faith in the Lord.
On February 12, 1930 Sophie was married to Floyd Charles Sherwin and moved to a farm North of Cumberland. They had one daughter Elaine Ruth (Sherwin) Budd. Sophie continued to garden and was active in the Cumberland Garden Club as well as First Lutheran Church. She remained on the farm until she was 89 when she moved to the Heritage House in Atlantic.
She is survived by the granddaughters Michelle Budd, Niki Budd, and Cheryl Ginolfi & her husband Phil Ginolfi, six great grandchildren Rocky Grider, Melissa Budd, Ashli McKernan, Brennan McKernan, Kaitlyn Ginolfi and Cody Ginolfi—all of California. Nieces Ardith Ortgies and Joann Blum, and nephew Duane Ortgies and his wife Carolyn as well as great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by Floyd Sherwin, Elaine Ruth (Sherwin) Budd, parents John & Clara Ortgies, brothers John Ortgies, Hank Ortgies, and sister Minnie (Ortgies) Aupperle.
