Obituary for
Alene "Bea" Shearman (Weatherby)
Alene "Bea" Weatherby Shearman, 106, of Des Moines and formerly of the Anita and Atlantic areas, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines.
The daughter of Edward Dennis and Emily Gertrude Horton Weatherby, she was born February 22, 1909, west of Anita, Iowa, at her parents' home and grew up southeast of Anita. She graduated from Anita High School in 1927, and went on to nurses' training in Atlantic, Iowa. Bea was united in marriage to Ivan Matthew Shearman, June 17, 1931, at her parents' home, and they moved to Atlantic where they owned and operated a hamburger shop on 5th street in Atlantic. She worked for 40 years at the Atlantic Memorial Hospital and Cass County Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse and a nurse supervisor.
Ivan and Bea fished together every time they had a chance. They also loved to travel and made numerous fishing trips to Wisconsin, as well. They grew and dealt with the bounty of their yearly garden as a team and she was fond of saying that "Ivan forgot that once you plant those seeds they need some care." Through the years, she enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross. She bowled on league teams for 60 years; her highest score was a 256 and her highest series was 612. Bea also loved dogs and enjoyed trips to the casino. Ivan passed away August 24, 1985, and she continued to live in Atlantic and enjoyed her home until she moved to Wesley Acres in Des Moines in October of 2014.
She is survived by her sister, Lela Judd of Des Moines, IA; nieces and nephews, Ruth Nelson of West Des Moines, IA, Kenneth (Marilyn) Judd of Hot Springs Village, AR and Lyle (Donna) Weatherby of Plattsmouth, NE; great nieces and nephews, Alan Rice of Griswold, IA, Janet Nelson of West Des Moines, Brian (Kelli) Nelson of Shawnee, KS, Steven (Natalie) Judd of New Haven, CT, and Sheri (Kevin) Smith of Neola, IA, Darla Lash, Nadine McLaughlin, Russell Weatherby, Troy Weatherby, Tracy Weatherby, and Rick Weatherby; many great-great-nieces and nephews; two great-great-great-nephews; and many cousins and friends.
