Edith R. Shank
Edith Shank, 87, a long time resident of Atlantic, died on Tuesday, October 25, 2005.Edith Roberta was born to Charles and Emma May (Hamilton) Shank on January 13, 1918, in Montevideo, Minnesota. Three years later a brother, Kennon, joined the family. As a youngster, Edith lived with her family in Bagley, Iowa. She started school at age 5, but because her mother had taught her to read, she skipped a grade. At the age of 16 she graduated from Panora High School. After graduating she attended Iowa Wesleyan for one year. She helped in the family grocery store in Dallas Center and commuted to classes at AIB in Des Moines. Following her graduation from AIB, she worked in the Treasurer"s Office at Simpson College and earned her BA degree in English from Simpson College.She taught in Lineville, Murray, and Story City before moving to Denver to work for the Veterans Administration as a secretary. In 1948 she moved to Atlantic and taught Junior High English for six years. In 1954, Armond Schuler convinced her to work in the Superintendent"s Office where she served as Secretary to the Superintendent and to the Board of Education of the Atlantic Community School District until her retirement in the fall of 1982.Edith enjoyed her family and her friends in Atlantic. Her nieces and their families held a special place in her heart, and she was a very special "aunt&" to two boys (now young men). Edith"s fried chicken and homemade pies with the flakiest crust were always a yummy treat. She enjoyed cooking and reading. Being a very calm, caring person, she was always able to see the good in every situation. "I do the best with what I"ve got." She was a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi, a member of PEO, Chapter MU, the Browning Book Club, and the Dorcas Circle of the First United Methodist Church.Edith is survived by one brother, Kennon H.
