Robert Schuttloffel
Robert William Schuttloffel of Sun City, Arizona passed away Saturday, December 3, 2005 at the Sun Land Memorial Home at the age of 91.Robert was born on November 23, 1914, on the Schuttloffel farm six miles south of Walnut. He was the fourth child in the family of John "Andy" and Dora (Sell) Schuttloffel. Robert "Bob" grew up on the farm and attended rural school for eight years at Lincoln #2. He drove to Walnut to high school where he graduated with the class of 1931. He stayed on the farm and helped his brother Elton and his father. Bob also had a great musical talent, winning the old time fiddlers' contest in Shenandoah when he was twelve years old. He played piano in a small local dance band, The Moonlight Serenaders, which had originally been organized by his brothers and two friends as "The Triple S. Orchestra". They played for many dances in the area until World War II. During the war, Bob was inducted into the army. First he was given basic training in Texas and then was stationed at Lincoln, NE where he trained in airplane maintenance. He was sent to Brisbane, Australia and while there, he had the opportunity to take a long train trip to Adelaide where he was able to visit some Schuttloffel family relatives who were living there. From Australia, Bob was sent to New Guinea where he spent the remainder of the war.He came back to help his father on the farm and married Ruby Sothman of Atlantic on March 28, 1954 at the Zion Lutheran Church. They lived several years on the farm and when the farm was sold after the death of his father, Bob and Ruby moved to Atlantic where they enjoyed some happy years together in their home on Plum Street. Both Bob and Ruby worked for her father in his farm implement business in Atlantic.After Ruby's death on November 25, 1968, Bob sold his house and moved to Sun City where Ruby's parents had gone to enjoy their retirement. There he bought a house on Oakridge Drive where he lived his remaining years. During his life in Sun City, he was a member of the Fountain of Life Lutheran Church. He worked for quite some time doing janitorial maintenance at a local recreation center.
