Obituary for
Shirley J. Schroeter
Shirley Jane Schroeter, the daughter of Martin Emil and Anna Marie Nelson Hansen, was born February 20th, 1939 on a farm near Exira, Iowa and died October 22, 2018, at the age of 79 years and 9 months. Shirley attended rural schools northwest of Brayton and later attended Exira Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1957. On January 30th, 1958 she was united in marriage to Rodney Gene Schroeter, son of Louis C. and Harriett Elaine Winther Schroeter, at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, west of Audubon, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Shirley and Rodney lived in Atlantic, Iowa before moving to a farm purchased from her parents, located one mile north of Brayton, Iowa in 1964. While living on the farm, Shirley partnered with Rodney in many ways, including doing the evening milking of the dairy cows, raising geese, turkeys, and chickens. Like her father, Shirley enjoyed vegetable gardening; and like her mother, she preserved fresh produce for use over the following winter. The jams and jellies she made were a family favorite and will be greatly missed. At a young age, Shirley mastered baking and cooking skills. Family favorites included pies, bars, cookies, cream puffs, sweet and dinner rolls, noodles, pressed chicken luncheon meal (aka: particle board), and homemade granola. While living at Brayton, Shirley was a member of the neighborhood Busy Bee Club, Brayton Lutheran Church and she worked for 23 years as a home health aide.
After moving to Atlantic, she and Rodney enjoyed meeting friends for coffee and/or breakfast several mornings a week and a monthly card party with another group. Shirley also enjoyed regular gathers with high school classmates and attending the Oak Tree Opry where she sometimes heard a favorite song “Little Brown Dog and Little Green Frog”. Her grandchildren relished her annual “Bingo Party” for which she spent the entire year collecting the perfect bingo gifts for everyone that would attend. Anyone who knew Shirley quickly saw that she had a very kind heart and was always looking for ways to help, or share with others. When adversity came knocking at her door, she seldom complained but often said “it is what it is” and then looked for ways to make the best of the situation.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Arthur, Melvin, Kenneth, and Dwight, who died in infancy; and a granddaughter, Meredith Fellows, who also died in infancy.
Surviving Shirley are her husband, Rodney of Atlantic, Iowa; a son, Timmie Dean Schroeter (Deb) of Brayton, Iowa; a daughter, Susan Marie Smith (Michael) of Brayton; and a daughter, Amy Jo Fellows (J.D.) of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Benjamin Smith, Bethany Langer, Allison Johnston, Andrew Smith, Joseph Smith, Anna Smith, Thomas Smith, Morgan Fellows, Rebecca Ybarra, Hunter Fellows, and Cal Fellows; 6 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives; numerous friends; and some very special chemo nurses and Allen Place Staffs who brought both comfort and compassion to Shirley during her recent experience with cancer.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2018, 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 6:30 p.m., at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 25, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, Iowa. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
