Obituary for
Gilbert "Gib" H. Schoenbohm
Gilbert "Gib" H. Schoenbohm, 95, of Atlantic, formerly of Wiota, passed away October 2, 2017, at Heritage House.
Gilbert was born February 20, 1922, on the family farm north of Cumberland, Iowa, the son of Hajo Bernard and Elise (Ihnen) Schoenbohm. He attended rural school near Cumberland and graduated from Cumberland High School with the Class of 1940. During school he helped on the family farm and worked as a hired hand for several area farmers.
On March 16, 1940, he was united in marriage to Helen Spies in Maryville, Missouri and to this union four children were born, Harold, Sandra, Nedra, and Dennie. Gib worked for area farmers and rented a farm south of Massena before purchasing the family farm. He grew row crops, milked cows, and raised chickens, hogs, and cattle. Gib continued to enjoy his home until he moved to Heritage House on January 3, 2015.
Gib was a member of the First Lutheran Church where he served on the church board and was part of the men’s club for several years. He was also a member of the Farmers Coop Board and the Cass County Fair Board; where he helped construct the livestock barns. Gib loved to play cards especially 500, Hand and Foot, Pitch, and Pinochle, and looked forward to joining others at neighborhood card club gatherings. He was also a skilled woodworker. Gib and Helen enjoyed camping and traveling south for the winter with their good friends. Most of all he cherished the time he spent with his family.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Helen Schoenbohm of Atlantic; children, Harold Schoenbohm of Council Bluffs, Sandra Bowers of Wichita, Kansas, and Nedra (Delbert) Elmquist of Hamlin; seven grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Henkenius of Cumberland; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
