John Schmitt

John Schmitt, 74, of Griswold, Iowa, and formerly of Atlantic, died Friday, September 28, 2018, at the Griswold Care Center.

John was born to Glen and Mabel (Anderson) Schmitt on January 24, 1944, at home in Marne, Iowa. John was the 8th of 13 children.

John attended school in Atlantic, Iowa and worked in sales for 49 years. He and Kathryn (Darrow) joined in marriage on April 4, 1964. To this union four children were born.

John was preceded in death by his son, Todd; his parents, Glen and Mabel; his father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Lola Darrow; brothers, Elmer (Bud), Frank, Lee, and David; sisters, Olena, Mary Ann and Betty.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Griswold; sons, Brian (Julie) Schmitt of Robinson, Illinois; Mitchell (Amy) Schmitt of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Elizabeth Peters of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandchildren, Joshua (Karie) Schmitt, Rachel Schmitt, Courtney (Keith) Rich, Hannah Schmitt; Weston Schmitt, Allison Schmitt, Jordan Edmonds, Dylan (Codi) Peters, Ethan Peters, Megan (Adam Recker) Peters; six great-grandchildren; Siblings, Violet Provo, Shirley (Bud) Schmitt, Della Harrah, Jesse (Shirley) Schmitt, Joe (Jeanie) Schmitt, Dorothy (Jerome) Peters; brothers and sisters-in-law, Virgil and Sharon Sanny and David and Mary Darrow; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 30, 2018, at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018, at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold, with Pastor Tony Brandt officiating. A private family burial will be held prior to the service at Brighton Township Cemetery in Marne.
