Obituary for Mike Anthony Scheibeler
Mike Scheibeler, 79, a longtime Atlantic resident, died at Cass County Memorial Hospital on Saturday, February 16, 2008 after a brief illness. Born Michael Anthony Scheibeler to George and Ruth (McCardle) Scheibeler on January 3rd, 1929 in Imogene, Iowa; Mike grew up inShenandoah, Iowa where he excelled in all athletics graduating in 1947. He married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie Peterson, on November 22, 1950. While raising their four children, Beckie, Mark, Tammy, and Tim; They lived in Ottumwa, DeWitt and Atlantic, Iowa. Rose Marie passed away on February 6, 1986. Mike married Reatha Sievers on November 12, 1988 in Atlantic, Iowa. He enjoyed a long, productive career with the Iowa State Patrol and became a Lieutenant with the patrol in 1971, retiring in 1990 after serving for 37 years. His work was his play. After a year of unsatisfying retirement, he began working again and was appointed Director of Veteran Affairs for Cass County. He assisted in helping hundreds of veterans and widows over the course of 17 years with tireless dedication and diligence in securing their benefits and compensation. Mike was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks BPOE, and was the longest tenured secretary for the Atlantic Golf and Country Club in its history. An avid fan of all sports, Mike loved rooting for the Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football teams, while being a football season ticket holder for over 40 years. His support for the Atlantic Trojans was undeniable as well. He enjoyed being involved with the Atlantic high school boosters club and he and Reatha enjoyed a couple"s bridge group. He was a loving, caring, devoted husband, father and Popo to his grandchildren. We"ll miss his soft kisses and big bear hugs. He is survived by his wife Reatha and his children, Beckie (Jay) Suverkrup of Sarasota, FL, Mark (Jan) Scheibeler of Jefferson City, MO, Tamara (Oscar) Margain of Monterrey, MX and Tim (Cheryl) Scheibeler of Centennial, CO; step-daughters, Kristen Morrison of Omaha, NE and Laura (Will) Thomson of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Melissa (Tom) Wallich of St. Charles, MO, Erin (Christian) Mahler of Newton, MA, Whitney Byars of Manhattan, KS, Heather (Abel) Martinez of McAllen, TX, Oscar Margain, Jr. of McAllen, TX, Gian Margain of Monterrey, MX, Rory and Quinn Scheibeler of Centennial, CO; step grandchildren, Patrick, Cole and Scott Morrison of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Emma, Jack and Peter Mahler of Newton, MA, Rosie and Jillian Wallich of St. Charles, MO. He is also survived by three brothers, Jerry (Joyce) Scheibeler of Aurora, CO, Terry Scheibeler and Nancy Menard of Greeley, CO and Tim (Derryn) Scheibeler of Aurora, CO; his father and mother-in-law Lester and Ruth Rix of Olin, IA; sister-in-law Donna (Darrell) Jordan of Mr. Vernon, IA; brother-in-law Gary (Jane Ann) Rix of Olin, IA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Rose Marie; and numerous aunts and uncles.Funeral InformationHis Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, February 20 at the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Following, the committal service will take place in the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic. Father Dan Seipker will officiate. A Rosary Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. in the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. A visitation will begin at 6:30, with Mike"s family available to meet with friends until 8:30 P.M.
