JOHN SAUNDERS

John Saunders, age 85, formerly from Cumberland, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.
John James Saunders was born April 19, 1927 in Cumberland, Iowa to Joseph Patrick and Audrey Mary Anstey Saunders.
On May 1, 1975, John was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Colgan in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Council Bluffs until 1978 when they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. John worked as an engineer for the Iowa Department of Transportation for over 40 years. Upon his retirement, he and Margaret traveled the world. Being a devout Catholic, one of the highlights of those travels was an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret and sisters, Mary Alice Kazienko, Vivienne Doyle and Margaret Wheeler. Johns is survived by a brother, Joe Saunders of San Diego, California.
There will be an open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 14 and 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Services for John will be held on Thursday, August 16, at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church south of Cumberland at 10:00 a.m. with Father Robert Dufford officiating. Interment will be in St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemtery.
