Obituary for Pauline Sandhorst

PAULINE MARIE (WALDAU) SANDHORST
Pauline Sandhorst, age 94, passed on at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Pauline Marie was born in Cass County, May 11, 1917, the daughter of Paul "Bruno" T. and Louise (Duden) Waldau. She grew up attending schools in Wiota and Atlantic, Iowa. She received her diploma, graduating with the Atlantic High School Class of 1935.

Pauline was married to Ralph C. Sandhorst, in her parent's home in Wiota, on September 22, 1940. The couple lived on the family farm, one mile south of Wiota, where they enjoyed raising their family of five children. She worked as a nurse aide at Cass County Memorial Hospital from 1965 to 1977. She was a life-long member of the Wiota and Atlantic Zion Lutheran Churches.

Her interests included sewing and knitting and she especially enjoyed her flower gardens. She crocheted very special afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. She took care of both of her parents until they passed on and her dearest accomplishment was keeping and caring for her special needs son, Eugene, until she passed. Pauline enjoyed having company, and her family and friends will treasure memories of how happy she was to see them arriving for visits.

Her survivors include her children: Harvey and Betty Sandhorst of Atlantic, Donnis and Wayne Kessler of Atlantic, Roger and Sharon Sandhorst of Atlantic, Janet and Gene Larsen of Walnut, and Eugene Sandhorst of Atlantic; six granchildren; ten great grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Iola Waldau Wilson.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; her parents, Bruno and Louise; and her brother, Lawrence Waldau.

There will be Open Visitation, with viewing, September 3 through 5, Saturday morning from 8:00 to 12:00 a.m.; Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.; and Monday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Roland Funeral Home. There will be no particular set time for family visitation. Pauline's funeral service will take place at the Atlantic Zion Lutheran Church at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6. Pastor Ken Davidson will officiate. Pauline's committal service will be held in the First Lutheran Cemetery, south of Wiota and a luncheon will follow back at the Atlantic Zion Lutheran Church.

Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic, Iowa is caring for Pauline's family and the arrangements. Condolences may be left in her guest book at rolandfuneralservice.com.
