Obituary for
Harvey P. Sandhorst
Harvey Paul Sandhorst
Harvey P. Sandhorst, a longtime resident of Atlantic, IA, passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic at the age of 70 years.
Harvey was born December 11, 1941, in Atlantic to Ralph and Pauline Sandhorst. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA. He graduated from Wiota High School in 1960 and enlisted in the Army on May 28, 1960, two days after graduation and served in the National Guard for 6 years. He married Betty Lou (Pierson) on November 12, 1973 in Atlantic. Harvey worked at Payless Cashway for three years, Nels Folsang & Sons, Alvie Mauk (and bought his first truck from him), Boar Power. He moved to California in July of 1985 to worked there until July 1995. He returned to Atlantic and worked for Schmitt & OFC for 10 years and retired at the age of 65.
Harvey and Betty will be remembered for how they shared a great sense of humor. He has been loyal to the St. Louis Cardinals—and while in the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab, folks were happily entertained by the antics of he and 100 year old Loren King—as they struck up a wonderful comradery, cheering their team. He enjoyed his birdfeeder outside his window and saw to it the feathered friends were always fed, even until right before he passed away.
Harvey Sandhorst is survived by his wife, Betty; two brothers: Roger (Sharon) Sandhorst of Atlantic, IA; and Eugene Sandhorst of Atlantic, IA; two Sisters: Donnis (Wayne) Kessler of Atlantic, IA; and Janet (Gene) Larson of Walnut, IA; four sons: Lynn (Sandy) Ranney of Red Oak, IA; Mark (Pam) Ranney of Red Oak, IA; Terry (Helen) Ranney of Massena, IA; and Brad Ranney of Houston, TX. Two daughters: Chelly Latus of Massena, IA; and Sherry Ranney of Massena, IA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, his Aunt Iola (Waldau) Wilson and many nieces and nephews. Harvey was preceded in death by two sons Gary Ranney and Phil Ranney.
