CHARLES SANDHORST

Charles Sandhorst, 96, of Atlantic, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Heritage House in Atlantic.

Charles Raymond Sandhorst was born on September 10, 1920, in Wiota, Iowa, the son of John Gerhardt and Charlotte Fredricka (Sell) Sandhorst. He attended rural school near Wiota, and graduated from Cumberland High School with the Class of 1938. After graduation Charles helped on the family farm until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on November 5, 1942. During his tour of duty he served in the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged on December 8, 1945.

On June 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Lucile Ricklefs in Monticello, Iowa. Three children: Ann, Kathy and Tom were born to this union. They made their home in Atlantic where Charles was employed with the United States Postal Service for 30 years; delivering mail in the Atlantic business district until his retirement. Mary Lou died October 9, 2010. Charles continued to enjoy his home in Atlantic until moving to Heritage House in April of 2015.

Charles was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. In his younger years he was on a bowling league for Irv's Elbow Room at the Hawkeye Bowl. His love of music led him to becoming a member of the Barber Shop Chorus and Quartet; traveling all over the world performing. Charles was an avid woodworker and enjoyed playing bridge with Mary Lou and friends. He looked forward to watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs play on T.V.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Ann Sandhorst and her husband, Robert Lederman of Rutherford, NJ and Kathy Rumery and her husband, Jerry of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Jennifer Kerber and her husband, Zach of Council Bluffs, IA, Jon Rumery of Omaha, NE, Jeff Rumery of Omaha, NE, and Matt Lederman of Rutherford, NJ; great-grandchildren, Isabel and Ashlyn Kerber of Council Bluffs, IA; two nieces, a nephew, other relatives and friends.
