Obituary for
Vernon J. Sandbothe
Vernon Sandbothe, 82, of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at Allen Place in Atlantic, Iowa.
Vernon was born on June 14, 1933, in Panama, Iowa, to Stephen and Barbara (Pauley) Sandbothe, and was raised in the Portsmouth area. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Vernon attended school in Panama, graduating in 1951. He joined the United States Army serving from September of 1953 to September of 1955. On November 12, 1955, he married Mary A. Blum at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. They are the parents of Stephen, William, Lawrence, Randall, Douglas, Thomas and Allen.
Following their marriage they started farming in the Panama/Portsmouth area for two years, then near Denison until the Spring of 1960, when they came to Atlantic to farm and run their own dairy business. Vernon did a lot of volunteer work with 4-H and FFA during those years, as well. The couple opened their home up and provided care and guidance to Mike Smith and Brian Elmquist, who continue to be part of the family today.
Heartbreak came in the fall of 1985, when they lost their oldest son, Steve. The following spring, Vernon and Mary moved to another farm south of Atlantic and he started trucking for Sorensen Feed and Grain of Cumberland, Iowa. He then bought his own truck and worked with Cannonball Express out of Omaha, Nebraska. Vernon retired and moved to Allen Place on December 26, 2011.
He was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He spent numerous years donating his time with the Cass County Fair Grounds during fair time. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a big influence with them in farming and driving semi. He also loved to see his grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals.

Foot-Prints In the Sand
One night I had a dream. I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the skies flashed scenes from my life. In each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One was mine, and one was the Lord’s. When the last scene of my life appeared before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand, and, to my surprise, I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of foot-prints. And I noticed that it was at the lowest and saddest times in my life. I asked the Lord about it: “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way. But I notice that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why you left my side when I needed you most.” The Lord said: ”My precious Child, I never left you during your time of trial. Where you see only one set of foot-prints, I was carrying you.”
