Rosamond M. Royalty
Rosamond Mathisen Royalty, long-time Atlantic resident, died of complications of Alzheimer's disease at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa on Monday, August 20, 2001. She was 89.The daughter of Adam and Minnie (Rasmussen) Mathisen, Mrs. Royalty was born February 11, 1912, near Royal in Clay County, Iowa. As a young child she and her family homesteaded in Havre, Montana for several years before returning to Iowa, where she graduated from Rossie High School in 1929. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and later graduated from the University of Omaha in 1962. She received her master's degree from Drake University in 1967.Rosamond married Vinson Royalty on June 1, 1934, in Ponca City, Nebraska. She was a teacher whose 45 year career included teaching assignments in the Pymosa rural school, Wiota and Lewis, and finally at Jackson Elementary and the Atlantic Junior High School. She retired in May of 1984. Mrs. Royalty Was a member of The United Church of Christ and a Past Member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association.Mrs. Royalty is survived by two sons and a daughter; William Royalty and his wife, Virginia, of Moscow, Idaho; Nancy Richards of Iowa City; and Joel Royalty of Murray, Kentucky. Also surviving are six grandchildren; Christopher Richards and his wife, Jennifer of Iowa City; Timothy Richards of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Elizabeth Richards of Orlando, Florida; Alexis Royalty of Washington, DC; Joel Royalty and his wife of Murray, Kentucky; and Adam Royalty of Moscow, Idaho. She is also survived by a great granddaughter; a nephew, Edwin Mathisen and his wife Dixie, and a sister-in-law, Cleo Mathisen of Atlantic.Mrs. Royalty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1958, and a brother, Derold "Matt&" Mathisen.Funeral InformationServices for Rosamond will be held Thursday, August 23, 2001, at the United Church of Christ at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend John McKinstry of the First Christian Church in Iowa City, Iowa officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
